Get a Library Card

Process for getting a Library card.

Adults

Free library cards are issued to residents.  Adults, 18 and up must provide a driver’s license or picture ID with current address. Residents are defined as adults who live in Addison Township.

Children

Residents 17 and younger must first have a parent sign up for a card.  Any child can obtain a library card as long as the parent understands that the parent is responsible for any fines or lost items checked out by their child. When a child’s or adult’s card is blocked due to fines over $5.00, the family’s cards are blocked until the fine is brought under the $5.00 threshold.

Non-residents

  • Non-residents, in order to check out materials, must have a library card from their home library in good standing (no fines over $5.00). The current library card from the home library must be scanned into our system. The home library is the library the patron pays taxes to. Non-resident users may borrow materials, but are not able to place holds, interlibrary loans or use Overdrive.
  • The Library Network: Non-resident patrons from a TLN library must present their home library card. These patrons can place holds but don’t have access to our Overdrive Collection.
  • MILibrary (previously called Michicard) guest applicants must also present a photo ID and their home library card with a MILibrary sticker obtained from their local library. Similar non-resident restrictions apply-no holds or Overdrive access.

Renewal of Cards

Cards must be renewed in person every three years. Residents must provide the same type of documentation used to apply for renewal. Minors must renew their cards upon turning 18 years of age to assume legal responsibility for items checked out.

Responsibility

Patrons are responsible for all materials borrowed on the card and agree to abide by library circulation policies and other library policies. If the patron declares to have returned materials, the library will search for the missing items for one month. Items not located within in one month will be billed to the card holder’s account. There is a $1 replacement charge for lost cards. Lost cards should be reported immediately.
