A woman of letters, Iris Lee Underwood writes an award-winning weekly column titled “Honest Living” for the Tri City Times in Imlay City, Michigan. She is a contributor to the Detroit Institute of Arts Art & Sole Newsletter. As a freelancer she has written profiles and feature stories for The Detroit News, Grand Rapids Press, Appalachian News Express, Oakland Press, Oxford Leader, Metro Parent, Michigan Out-of-Doors, edible- Wow, and others.

Poetry is her first literary love, and she has published poetry in The MacGuffin, Farming, Mary Jane’s Farm, and Woods and Waters magazines. Her poetry won prizes in the Writer’s Digest Annual Competition 2010.

Iris is a Past President of the Detroit Working Writers, and is currently Historian and New Membership Chair. As Writer-in-Residence of the Troy (Michigan) Public Library for fourteen years, she energized countless writers to record their story and leave their legacy.

She serves as a volunteer at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and as a docent for the “Discover the Wonders” tour at the Detroit Public Library. She also volunteers for Seven Ponds Nature Center in Dryden (Michigan) with fellow Friends of Herbs.

Iris is a graduate of Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. A lavender farmer, she lives in a rural community with her husband, Mel, cat Mo, and five hens. They have two surviving daughters and a grandson. http://www.seattlebookcompany.com/the-mantle/
